I will again preface this discussion by saying that I am strictly referring to Young Living essential oils. I cannot speak for other brands of essential oils as I do not use them.
Before I go into explaining the effectiveness of essential oils, let’s take a quick look at some of the benefits of using essential oils :

You’ve probably heard me say in previous posts that YL essential oils are potent. To appreciate the potency of essential oils, you have to understand frequency.
Every living thing, including disease, has a frequency. Frequency is measured in Hertz (Hz). In 1992, Bruce Tainio created a frequency monitor.
Here are a few examples of what this frequency monitor determined:
A healthy human body in the daytime registers a frequency between 62-72 MHz. Whenever that frequency drops, the body’s immune system is compromised.
When the body’s frequency drops the 58 MHz, cold and flu symptoms begin to appear. At 55 MHz, candida is present. At 52 MHz, Epstein-Barr virus is present. Cancer can begin to appear at 42 MHz. And at 20MHz, the body is in a state of death.
There are many outside factors that can also contribute to the body’s frequency. For instance, pollution can lower the frequency. And studies have shown that prayer and positive thinking can actually raise the body’s frequency.
Food is another group that can be measured by frequency, with the healthier foods at a higher MHz. Here are some examples:
Fresh produce can have up to 15MHz, and fresh herbs up to 27MHz.
Canned and processed foods have virtually zero MHz.
Now that you have an idea of the frequency of the human body, and the frequency of things that can affect the body, what about essential oils? Where do they fit in on the frequency meter?
Essential oils start at a frequency of 52 MHz and go up to 320 MHz. They have the highest frequency of any natural substance known to man!
Now will you agree that they are potent?
So, the argument that essential oils are ineffective is not valid in respect to their potency.
So why would some people claim that essential oils don’t work?
Well, they could be uneducated about them. Or they could be using them improperly. Remember, the guidelines on the bottle should always be followed for use of the oils.
Also, there are different ways to “pull” the best use of the oil. For example, oils can be driven deeper into the skin by applying a wet compress over the oil on the skin.
Or, it could be the application of the oil. Some people diffuse peppermint oil to maintain proper digestion. I prefer to apply peppermint oil directly to my skin (remember for children and those with sensitive skin, dilute peppermint with a carrier oil!). Others prefer to inhale peppermint oil, and still others will put some peppermint oil into a capsule and ingest it.
It could be how often a person uses the oil that would make them deem it ineffective. Most applications require one drop of oil, but some may require two or more. And for a lingering problem, let’s say during times of stress, you will want to reapply the oil after a few hours.
Some essential oils have proven to be more effective when used in conjunction with other essential oils. I generally don’t advise “layering” oils, only because (especially with the blended oils), the effectiveness can vary when the chemical makeup is changed due to the combined oils. Young Living has experts who carefully put together the oils blends in just the right quantity to make them powerful and effective. Adding to that can “mess up” that powerful combination. That being said, I have layered oils, but I stagger them. So, instead of applying them both at once, I will apply the first and then add the second oil about 20 minutes later (thereby giving the first oil ample time to enter the bloodstream).
One other thing to consider – everyone’s bodies are different. One oil may work great for one person, and not for another. There are dozens of choices of essential oils that can be used. If an oil doesn’t give you the desired effect, try another one. You WILL find one that works for you.
